• Diversity Club

  The Diversity Club’s mission is to create a respectful and welcoming environment that engages the community with the goal of bringing awareness, understanding, and inclusivity through student programming, workshops, and student leadership development opportunities. The club hosts weekly meetings, guest speakers, open forum discussions, Diversity Week, and educational field trips with the goal of creating a space for authentic conversations on contemporary topics, social justice, and advocacy. Diversity Club aims to make equity and inclusion a focus of our students' everyday lives and to uphold diversity at the center of Buckley's philosophy.

• F.I.T.E (Feminists Insisting on Total Equality)

  FITE Club is an all-inclusive gender equality group dedicated to raising awareness and combating issues relating to discrimination. Our weekly meetings center around guided discussions about socio-political issues affecting women around the world. Our goal is to inform, inspire, and empower both men and women to take action to improve our society. Throughout the school year, we engage in a number of fundraising activities to aid non-profit organizations devoted to supporting and educating causes related to women’s rights and freedom. 

• FIRST Robotics

  Buckley’s FIRST Robotics team has a guiding philosophy: “WE, not me.” FIRST Robotics is not only about being able to assemble and program a robot; it taps into students’ creativity, leadership, problem-solving skills, interest in engineering, and thirst for competition. Individual members share their talents and strengths to benefit the team whether you want to build and program a robot, manage the team’s schedule, or help create the team’s image.

   

  Robotics is open to students in grades 9 through 12; enrollment is limited. The cost of joining the team is $395.

• Literary Magazine

• Journalism

  Student journalists from sixth through twelfth grades find their creative voices through the school’s multi-faceted print and digital journalism program that includes The Junior Voice, The Student Voice, and Images yearbook. Learning the fundamentals of traditional newspaper and yearbook and exploring web possibilities, students become adept at writing everything from in-depth human interest stories to  “listacles"; they produce video, photo, and graphic coverage, broadcast podcasts, write interactive polls, post Instagram images--and tweet, reaching their audience through all current media available. Buckley journalists also learn design as well as industry-standard software skills, attend national conventions, create award-winning publications, and move quickly into leadership positions on the staffs of their university’s media outlets.  

• Junior State of America (JSA)

  JSA brings together students from southern California who are interested in current events, politics, and government to learn more about the complex issues we face today. JSA is a student-run, non-profit, non-partisan organization established in 1934. The student leaders, elected by their peers, decide the focus and goals of the organization. The Junior State promotes an interchange of ideas while building strong leaders through responsible, active decision-making, and civic education.
  
  

  Throughout the school year, JSA runs three major overnight conferences that allow for an exchange of ideas through peer-lead debates, thought talks, and mock-legislative sessions. Major political leaders are featured as keynote speakers. JSA also holds local one-day conferences and in-depth summer school programs at prestigious universities across America. 

• Lower School Student Council

  The Lower School Student Council consists of a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, historian, community relations officer, and classroom representatives for second through fifth grade. Each year, elections are held in October and February so that more students can participate. Members meet on a weekly basis during their lunch period to discuss ideas for fundraising or to focus on community service projects that are age-appropriate. The council leads the weekly assemblies in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and makes announcements to the student body about upcoming events.

• Middle and Upper School Student Council

  In Middle School, the responsibilities of leadership are increased as students help plan events, assist with admission events, and preside at assemblies and other student functions. The focus is on leadership training with a heavy emphasis on problem-solving at the weekly lunchtime meetings. Annual elections are held in the spring for president, vice president, and four representatives from each class in grades six through eight.
  
  The Upper School Student Council elects officers and grade-level reps each year and plans and oversees school and grade-level events, including assemblies, Spirit Week, and the Buckley Student Leadership Conference. Officers and representatives also work to build school spirit and involvement. Upper School representatives and the executive board are encouraged to take a class entitled “Leadership in the 21st Century,” a full-credit class focusing on all aspects of the history of leadership and techniques of good leadership.

• Middle School Robotics

  Middle School Robotics is part of the VEX robotics program, one of the largest and fastest-growing middle school robotics programs in the world, with more than six thousand teams from 25-plus countries playing in hundreds of tournaments worldwide. Robotics is offered as part of the Middle School arts rotation, where class members will design and build robots to complete a prescribed task.

• Mock Trial

  Train to enter national mock trial competition where groups of students from different schools face off against each other in a courtroom setting, conducting a full trial with one side presenting the prosecuting lawyers and their witnesses, the other the defending lawyers and their witnesses.

• Model United Nations

  Formally called The Buckley School Chapter of the National High School Model United Nations, this Club brings together upper school students who are interested in the global issues that are addressed by the United Nations and allows them the opportunity to practice international relations, such as developing and debating policy proposals.
  
  

  Opening and Closing ceremonies are held in the UN General Assembly Chamber, where actual diplomats convene every year.  Further, students are also exposed to the vibrant culture and history of New York City.

• National Honor Society/National Junior Honor Society (NHS)

  NHS recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Buckley members assist with new student orientation and open house events, host an annual new teacher luncheon, and volunteer in the Los Angeles area.
